Figure Skating Photography

One of my students and her sister are participating in an Ice Skating Competition in Sunway Pyramid. I excitedly asked if I could take photos. My student shyly agreed. *Grin*

I have never taken photos of moving subjects. Oh well, I have. I asked my girl to play on the swing and I tried shooting her BUT I could never take a good shot. I knew it has to do with my shutter speed but there are other factors to consider as well.

Of course, I had to turn to my mentor for some ice skating photography tips:

1. Keep the shutter speed at 1/250 and up
2. With my D7000 and 20-200mm f/2.8 lens, I can use an ISO up to 2000.
3. Keep the aperture at 2.8 and shoot at aperture priority.

And so, with these tips in mind, I thought of going to see while the girls are practicing. And so one night, I and my photography buff family lugged our cameras and lenses and marched on to see the practice.

I woke up from my dream. Shooting a moving subject is next to impossible - well in my case, it was. I felt that the universe suddenly was against me! Low light that resulted to a very high shutter speed. With my 2000 ISO, I could only get a 1/160 shutter speed. Plus, I didn't have a good location to shoot.

Came back home and reverted back to my ever-supportive mentor... He took a look at some of my photos and gave me some more tips.

I really hope that on the day of the Ice Skating competition, they will bump up the light and it would be best if they could use a spot light.

We will be seated next to the judges... I guess that would be the best location for me.

The image below was a sample of my practice photos. I am hoping to do a better job on Figure Skating Photography on the day of the competition.

I tried this one time, we went malling and I brought my camera, and kids were practicing at the skating rink for their Halloween presentation. It is easier with a tripod Nangawit ako holding my camera.. I was trying my best to capture a good angle while the kids are on air but I failed... Got so tired! And I don't want to be rude with my friends waiting for me to finish so nabitin ako! Hehe.. Will post my trial shots also soon.. Thanks for this post! ;)

Coolness. Will be waiting to see your photos. I have been googling for some ice skating images to see which angles I could use, too. Totally feeling nervous now... but I am really hoping to do a good job on that day,

Thanks for the visit!
